Black owned and Proud

My journey with minimalism has made me take a closer look at the products and companies I support. I strive to support as many sustainable brands as often as I can but I also feel it important to support small, under represented brands too. In addition to highlighted products, I also want to share some of my favorite Black owned spots in the 757. Here are some great brands by People of Color I love.

Blk and Bold Coffee is one of the first black owned coffee brands I learned about during my search for POC owned products.

I enjoy mild coffees the most, honesty I'm not really a coffee drinker. My coffee is oftened described as milk and cream with a hint of coffee. However, on the occassions I do drink I wanted to have a sustainable or minority owned option. I have tried both mild versions offered by Blk and Bold, Brighter Days and Limu, Ethiopia. Both are smooth and tasty without a burnt or harsh after taste. In addition to those two, I have purchased Rise and Grind, a medium roast. My husband enjoys a bolder coffee taste and really loves Rise and Grind. One aspect I love is that Blk and Bold is available at my local Target so it is convenient to purchase. Another great thing about Blk and Bold Coffee is 5% of their profits are donated to support youth in need programs. Great tasting and doing good. If you are looking for a great, easy to find POC produced coffee, definitely give Blk and Bold a try.

Black Girl Sunscreen is a recent trial for me. I've been wanting to try it every since I read about it. I hesitated to buy it because I have so many partially used face sunscreens that I didn't like because it left a white cast, was difficult to rub in or any other reason. I wind up having to purchase sunscreen on a family trip and decide to give this a try and I'm super happy I did.

First, it is a clear and smooth cream. It goes over easily and feels both mositurizing and light weight. it does have to be reapplied every 80 mins but the bottle is a nice size and this doesn't feel like your traditional sunscreen, so I have no issues reapplying it. This is another product that is easily found in your local Target. I love how this product feels and that it supports black owned. I will keep this in my skincare routine.

A coworker suggested the Honey Pot brand. She shared how the mint within the pads helped with her cramps.

I usually don't use disposable feminine products, I prefer my Diva cup. However, daughters are not ready for a cup so I get these. The minty sensation does take some getting use to but once you do, you'll be sold. This is another great find in your local Target. Target for the win with supporting minority products.

I've used The Doux products for both of my daughters curls. My oldest loves the Big Poppa define gel and I use the Mousse Def texture foam with my other daughters flexirod set. Both are incredible products and smells absolutely amazing. The Doux products give my girls curls the definition and hold they want while also helping their curls stay smooth and soft. As with all the other previously mentioned products, this is another find in your local Target.

I haven't personally used Scotch Porter but my brother highly recommends this. He enjoys the scent and feels it is a high quality product. It softens his beard and provides great moisture. Another key benefit is the reward program if you buy directly from Scotch Porter. This is also available locally in Target.

I also want to highlight some great black owned businesses in the 757. The next time you are visiting, you should also check out these great spots.

Gourmet Burger Bistro- Portsmouth, VA

Incredible burgers, sandwiches and wings. Try the Major Way or the Kennedy Rice Bowl.

MP's Island Cafe- Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA

Great Caribbean take out. The Jerk Chicken plate and the Brown Stew Chicken plate are my families favorite. You must have their candied yams and cabbage. Yum, Yum.

The Cobbler Cafe - Newport News, VA

A delicious variety of hot cobblers, cinnamon rolls, banana puddings and ice cream. My brother loves the classic peach cobbler, my favorite was the Praline Sweet Potato Cobbler. I also enjoyed the Red Velvet Banana Pudding.

Major Phillie - Norfolk, VA

Delicious Cheesesteaks. The sandwiches here are huge so come prepared to eat!!! The classics are fantastic but venture out and try the Jerk Chicken Cheese. If you're not super hungry, I highly suggest the Chicken Cheesesteak Major Philly Egg Rolls.

Andy's Barbershop - Norfolk, VA

A great locally owned barbershop. Come in for a great cut and even better conversation.
